What is Mediation?

What is Mediation

Family mediation is a structured, voluntary process that helps separating couples resolve disputes peacefully out of court. A trained, neutral mediator guides conversations about children, finances, and property division.

The mediator does not take sides or tell you what to do. Instead, they help you find practical solutions that work for everyone involved.

Why Choose Mediation?

Mediation puts you back in control of your future. It offers a structured space to design your own agreements.

  • It Saves Money: Mediation is significantly cheaper than going to court.
  • It Saves Time: You can reach an agreement in weeks rather than waiting months for court dates.
  • It Reduces Stress: The process is less adversarial than a courtroom battle.
  • It Protects Children: It focuses heavily on the best interests of your children.

How the Process Works

Getting started is simple and follows a few clear steps.

1. The Initial Meeting (MIAM)

First, you will attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting. This individual meeting checks if mediation is right for your specific situation.

2. Joint Sessions

Next, you and your ex-partner meet together with the mediator. You will openly discuss your concerns, explore options, and negotiate terms.

3. The Final Agreement

When you reach an agreement, the mediator writes down your proposals. You can then take this document to a solicitor to make it legally binding.

Funding Your Mediation

Financial support is available to help cover the costs of your meetings.

We provide Legal Aid services for child arrangements and financial settlements. If you qualify, your mediation sessions will be completely free.

Additionally, the government offers a £500 Mediation Voucher Scheme for eligible cases involving children. We will check your eligibility for these funding options during your initial meeting.
